The Organization: Jhansi Catholic Seva Samaj (JCSS)

Jhansi Catholic Seva Samaj (JCSS) is the official relief and development agency of the Catholic Diocese of Jhansi. The JCSS came into existence in the year 1985 and was registered in the same year under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. It was the time when the people of UP were facing the onslaught of severe drought. The prime task of the organization was to release the people from the cruel clutches of drought and its subsequent hunger and thirst. JCSS thus took the initiative to help the victims of drought through various development projects related to agriculture and irrigation.


It has been serving the people of Bundelkhand for last 33 years with dignity of social action forum of the Catholic Diocese of Jhansi.The diocese comprises of seven districts in U. P. namely, Jhansi, Lalitpur, Jalaun, Banda, Mahoba, Hamirpur and Chitrakoot. JCSS has to its credit 33 years of commitment in animation, covering 483 villages with different programmes to capacitate and develop the people of the target area. It has succeeded in bringing attitudinal and behavioral changes among the villagers through self-help, awareness programmes, trainings, seminars and workshops.


Over the years, JCSS has also taken up and implemented many projects related to education, health care, women empowerment, Self-Help Groups and socio-economic development programmes. The basic purpose of these activities is to uplift the rural masses and mitigate their suffering.One of the main objectives of JCSS is empowering village women. JCSS intervenes in different ways such as health care program, preventive health care, Self Help Groups for women, women kisan club, organic farming etc. to empower them. Through these programmes, JCSS aims at enhancing their self-confidence, power of decision-making, self-respect, self-reliance and ultimately uniting them together at the grass-root level that they are able to fight for their rights and dignity. When they are united, they will be able to fight for one another’s cause. They thus take each step forward with determination.Our commitment for the well-being of women who are deprived of their personhood, dignity and are struggling to come to the main stream of the society has been commendable.


JCSS Cares where no one Cares. It has reached remotest villages in the middle of the forest of Madawara Block Lalitpur and Manikpur blocks Chitrakoot in Bundelkhand region where dwells Sahariya, Gode and Koll tribe. JCSS is striving to impart education to these less-privileged children, helping these tribes to sustain their livelihood, providing them their basic needs of food, clothe and shelter through the community development programmes and enabling them to demand for their basic needs and rights from the Government.


The activities undertaken by the organization is mainly focused on livelihood promotion through sustainable agriculture development and income generation activities to improve the economic condition of the people of the target area. We collaborate with government departments in our new initiatives as to facilitate the target people to draw/ benefitfrom the government schemes especially livelihood schemes of state and central government. These new programmes are mainly focusing on women, families living below poverty line, persons with disability, minorities, scheduled castes and other backward classes.
